Chapter 8, How to Hack a Building-Size Display
If you don't want a home-size display, you can build a simple desktop system
by building only the circuit and using shorter wires to connect smaller LEDs
to the outputs of the 4049 ICs. See

1. Determine where you will set up the system
Locate a flat vertical surface at least 10 feet tall and 18 feet wide, with easy
access. An ideal area is the side of a building with two windows 20 feet apart
at the top. A hallway wall of a college dormitory is also an excellent choice.
Measure the area where you want to set up the display. You will need to use
this measurement later when you build the holding frame.
2. Assemble the LED driver board
You will now build the circuit board specified by the mini-Blinkenlights
schematics in
Exhibits E through M
. One of the circuit boards has 144
LED driver output pins connected to the LED on the frame, along with a
few ground return wires. The Shift Register board can be mounted up to 25
feet away from the PC via a long printer cable. You may be able to get longer
distances, but you will have to experiment.
All of the components should fit on one or two prototype perforated
boards.
The schematic in
Exhibit M
shows how to wire the LEDs and connect them to
the Bugger circuit.
Install sockets for all integrated circuits
Trim one piece of perf board to a rectangle with
the dimensions of 4" x 5", and one to dimensions
of 12" x 6". Take the first piece of perf board,
install the 18 16-pin IC sockets, and place them in
a manner similar to what is shown in
Figure 8-1
.
Solder the pins of each socket to the metal in the
holes. The easiest way to do this is to gently bend
the two opposite corners of the socket to hold the
unsoldered socket in place, flip the circuit board
over, and solder these two corners before soldering
the rest of the pins. Add a 25-pin printer port con-
nector (P7) and a latching power connector (buy
a hard drive power extender cable and cut off the
connector end you will need).
