the metal mesh with an open metal
crimp. Each crimped LED should
look something like
Figure 8-5
.
Mount each of the 144 LEDs in this
way over the surface of the wire
mesh, making sure that they all face
outward.
4. Wire the LED frame to the
LED drivers
It is now time to connect the LED drivers to each of the LEDs previously
mounted on the metal mesh frame. Measure the distance that the LED
frame will be from the control PC and LED driver circuit boards. Cut 19
pieces of CAT5 wire to this length, plus 10 feet.
Solder groups of 24 wires to a female DB25 connector according to
Exhibit
M
. This connector will mate with one of the female connectors on the LED
driver circuit boards. Solder the ground wire to one wire from the separate
CAT5 bundle. Since each bundle has eight wires, this bundle will require
three lengths of CAT5 wire. Grab one wire for ground from a shared-
ground-only CAT5 wire.
After all the wires have been sol-
dered to DB25 connectors, label
each bundle and lay it out on the
floor next to the LEDs and wire
mesh. Solder each wire to the long
leg of each LED, and seal the LED
and wire in hot-melt glue according
to the diagram in
Figure 8-6
. You
may also want to place each LED
at a location where there is more
than one wire of the mesh to secure
things, and use a small wire tie to
ensure that nothing moves.
The hot-melt glue serves two purpos-
es: it insulates the drive wire from
the wire mesh (which is ground),
and it holds the LED in place. Before
the hot-melt glue cools and hardens,
make sure that the LED is facing
upward and that the solder connec-
tion between the long LED leg and
the drive wire does not touch the wire mesh.
