Record Some Silence

Silence Is Golden—or Silver or Bronze

Extension Cords

Whenever you’re recording in a situation where there’s an
open mic, particularly if the space has any ambient quality
(meaning, it’s not completely dead), be sure to record some
stretches of silence during the downtime. Acoustic silence
is different from sonic silence, and every room has its
sound, even when there’s no one (or no instrument) making
sound. Clips of your environment’s particular brand of
silence can help to put a later, overdubbed part “in the
room,” particularly if that part is exposed or added on to
the front or back end of the recording. Audio silence is a
good way to bridge two exposed parts that may have had
their entrances or exits too tightly cropped. And in video
situations, overdubbed, looped ambient silence can aid a
slow fade to black by masking unwanted audio coming from
the video track.
