music: interview: The Lava Children
The Lava Children are fairly new children. They recently
recorded a mini-LP in LA while sort of on the way from Tulsa to Texas.
What they make could be described as nice swirly stuff with a female
voice that gives it added character and emotion. Check it out for yourself.

-You've just made a mini-LP. Please tell us about it.
We're very excited about our album. It comes out on Graveface Records May 26th. It will be available on beautiful, swirly pinky/green vinyl. The album includes a download code for the five songs plus a bonus track. Of course, it's available on CD as well, if that's your thing. We put a lot of care into the music, hoping to give people a disorienting, "down the rabbit hole" experience. We hope it makes many happy.
-Lava Children suggests play and hotspots! How did you get your name?
We found our name in an old book and it just resonated. We didn't spend much time mulling it over; it just made sense in some vague way.
-Looks like you're from Tulsa and on your way to Texas via LA. Why Texas?
We lived in Austin several years ago and loved it. It has a unique and inspiring feel that we miss. Lots of great bands, like-minded weirdoes and beautiful nature.

-Do you think there's a bit of Oklahoma in there?
It's possible, if you listen closely, that you can hear traces of Debris or Bob Wills. I'm not sure I can. Maybe there is an energy inherent to the state of Oklahoma that unconsciously slips into our music, it's hard to say. There are certainly many local musicians who have influenced us. In fact, we are currently collaborating with fellow Tulsan Chris Hastings of Most Trusted Replica.
-Do you have any kind of yardstick when measuring how far out is too far out or too inaccessible?
Our only yardstick is our own visceral reaction to the music we are making. I know that when I go see a band, I want to be taken over by the sound. We hope to offer the same experience when we play. Our music makes sense to us.
-What are your plans for the future?
We have an east coast tour with Black Moth Super Rainbow starting in late July. We also have many local shows in the works, starting with our record release show at the Soundpony in Tulsa. We are working up some new songs with Most Trusted Replica. Also, Kramer has expressed interest in producing our next LP, which is exciting because he has worked with so many of our favorite bands.
Thank you!
