The new Star Trek movie …

‘Live Long and…Oh, You Know

It’s true: the new “Star Trek” prequel movie is really,
really good. “The spirit of adventure and embrace of
rationality that define the show are in full swing,” writes
Manohla Dargis, “as are the chicks in minis and kicky
boots.” The J.J. Abrams remake has big-budget action and
effects, and a story with “emotional and dramatic force as
well some generous laughs,” thanks largely to the newcomers
playing Spock and Kirk. “Steering clear of outright
imitation,” Ms. Dargis writes, “the two young actors
instead distill the characters to capture their essence,
their Kirk-ness and Spock-ness.” Go see for yourself before
the inevitable SNL parody.

Morrissey life-style movie (NYC)

‘This Charming Man

There are music fans, and then there are Morrissey fans.
They bought out his show last night and are snapping up his
latest solo album, one of his best to date, according to
Ben Ratliff. A new documentary, “Passions Just Like Mine,”
follows some of his most dramatically obsessed fans. Set
in and around Los Angeles, it focuses on Latino groupies of
the pompadoured former singer for the Smiths, explaining
how these two subcultures streetwise immigrant kids
and New Age Brit-pop can meld. It screens tonight
at the Anthology Film Archives as part of its new filmmaker
series; the director, Kerri Koch, will be on hand for
angsty questions.
