IBM: the current flows away from gov $s
Posted by admin in news: general on March 26th, 2009
‘The current has been flowing in this direction for a while. In 2006, about 65 percent of IBM’s almost
400,000 employees worked overseas; at the start of this year, it was up to 71 percent. And the company has
made it clear that future hiring opportunities will be brightest in places like India, China and Brazil,
even inviting laid-off North American employees to follow the work and relocate abroad (see “Think of this
layoff as your gateway to an exotic cross-cultural adventure”).
Particularly rankling to the rank and file is that in the midst of all this, IBM is hoping to cash in on
some of the federal stimulus efforts, seeking a share of the $8
billion the U.S. plans to spend on high-speed rail and part of the $20 billion allocated to digitize the
health-care system. “It’s all about greed,” said Conrad. “They’re moving work offshore to pay lower wages
and lower taxes. IBM shouldn’t have their hands on stimulus money if they’re offshoring work.”
