Martin L Gore - Counterfeit2
LP, Mute A personal homage to his musical heroes, this is the second in a cover-version series by the Depeche Mode songwriter. Eleven classic tracks get a radical overhaul, but with such fine originals it's hard to see what Gore can really bring to them. When taking on the likes of The Velvet Underground, John Lennon and David Bowie, he does depart from the tracks' original vibe with some adventurous production styles, but the results are patchy, and the occasional successes are marred by an overall sense of self-indulgent, rather mawkish melodrama. Depeche Mode fans will likely be disappointed, as it seems to be more of an album for him than for anyone else. (Paul Allen)
