The Vanity Set, Little Stabs of Happiness LP, Cargo UK, released 1 Apr 03 This is the second album from Vanity Set and you know what second albums usually mean ... disappointment! Not this time though. This is a slightly darker, slightly slicker thing. Slicker, in that it sounds less like a group of musicians having fun and more like a more heavily scripted thing - that's not bad or good. It just has a different feeling to it. Like last time there is an eclectic mix of songs and sounds - theremin fans have something to search for on this, as well as tuba fans ... There seems to be more of Jim Sclavunos's expressive voice on this one as well. The album was written in the weeks after 9/11 in a basement in NYC's Lower East Side and it was recorded in Hoboken in the summer of 02. My favorite tracks are The Big Bang (topical, what?) and Bell Song. (thunderfinger)
